The Dopod S300, also known as the HTC StrTrk, has been hovering around the Internet like a lost starship for months now and everyone has tried to guess when it's going to land in Asia. This RAZR-like clamshell phone has been creating quite a buzz due to its tech-friendly Star Trek name and thin form factor, but its specs leave us wondering whether it deserves such a stellar title.
It runs on Windows Mobile 5 and features quadband and EDGE support, Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera and 64MB ROM and 64MB RAM. They're not exactly borg-blowing specs, but it is thin for a Windows-based mobile, measuring 16mm deep and weighing 99g.
The nifty smart phone is also Push Mail-ready for on-the-fly email delivery and updates. That aside, users with an assortment of mailing accounts can leverage on the multiple email profile support which is compatible with popular free emailing providers such as Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail.
During the launch hosted in The Arts House, Singapore, Dopod revealed plans to grow the StrTrk series and hinted at the possibility of a 3G-compatible model expected in Q3 2006.
The Dopod S300 will be available in Singapore from June at S$798 (US$507.05). This will be followed-by an Asia-wide launch scheduled in one to two weeks' time. Our S300 test unit just got in, so we are currently running tests on it. Look out for our full review soon.
