Samsung Omnia i900

Samsung's phones are as widespread and popular as Nokias these days and that success has come as a result of consistently producing sleek, good-looking handsets with mass appeal. But Samsung also wants a slice of the iPhone action, it would seem, and has made a big effort to produce one of its very own.

The Omnia, like the HTC Touch Diamond, is based on Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 and like the Diamond it replaces large parts of Microsoft's ugly and fiddly smartphone user interface with one of Samsung's design in an attempt to provide an iPhone-style touch screen experience.

Physically, it's very similar to the iPhone 3G, much more so than the Diamond, complete with slim, candybar form factor, a large screen dominating the front panel and minimalist controls. Compare the phones side by side and you'll find that dimensions are remarkably similar too, though the Omnia is a little slimmer, narrower and shorter than the iPhone 3G, at 12.5 x 112 x 56.9mm compared to 12.3 x 115.5 x 62mm.
Samsung Omnia i900

So how exactly does it stack up elsewhere? Well, as you'd expect from a modern Windows smartphone, there's a pile of features and many of these appear to match or outstrip the iPhone 3G equivalent. It has a five-megapixel camera on the rear with an LED flash and a VGA video call camera on the front - the iPhone's is three megapixels less and it has no video call feature. It also has HSDPA of up to 7.2Mb/sec, a 624MHz processor, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a GPS receiver and an FM radio. Plus it comes with a decent helping of storage – either 8GB or 16GB with microSD expansion as well.

Its screen, however, at 3.2 inches isn't quite as luxuriously spacious as the iPhone's and its 400 x 280 resolution is also inferior. There's also no 3.5mm headphone socket and though a conversion dongle is included in the box, we'd sooner not have to carry an adapter around just to listen to music and it seems a needless oversight given the capacious storage on offer.

The camera, however, is the main highlight here. Its resolution is the main headline: five megapixels is the highest resolution I've seen in a Windows Mobile device, but it also has image stabilisation, which means you don't have to rely on the less-than-ideal LED 'flash' in difficult lighting. The results are impressive. Inevitably given the pinhole lens shots are a little noisy in low light and focus a touch soft, but they're more than acceptable. You can use the Omnia for proper snaps - not just contact profile pictures.

Surprisingly for a Windows Mobile device, the Omnia also boasts iPhone-like speed and responsiveness and it's a darned site nippier than the HTC Touch Diamond - even with the Diamond's latest firmware applied. Applications launch speedily, browsing the web on the phone's superb Opera Mobile 9.5 web browser is zippy and the accelerometer, which rotates the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape as you flip the phone around in your hand, works just as you would expect it to, complete with fancy animations.

Samsung Omnia i900
Samsung's touch-driven user interface is a valiant effort at dealing with the inadequacies of Windows Mobile's UI, too. Interestingly, Samsung provides no stylus stowage on the Omnia – the stylus attaches to the phone's lanyard loop instead. This wouldn't be an issue, of course, but unfortunately the one key area where the Omnia can't compete is with the iPhone's beautifully elegant operating system.

It starts well. When you first fire the phone up you're confronted with a blank screen and a scrolling toolbar arranged down the left hand side. This contains a number of attractive, graphical widgets that you can drag into to the blank space to display stuff like recent emails, the time, currently playing music tracks, phone profile, calendar, analogue and digital clocks and so on.
Samsung Omnia i900
These don't just display information, though, they provide basic controls too, so not only can you see who your most recent email is from, you can also click it to read it in full, or scroll back to see who the previous mail was from. Music tracks can be paused and skipped and favourite contacts can be added or removed as well.

It's an interesting approach and allows you to completely customise the front end of the phone. It's easy to get a little over enthusiastic and clutter the screen to such an extent that it becomes unusable, but fortunately stowing away widgets you're not using is simple - you simply drag them back over to the toolbar.
Samsung Omnia i900
There's also a more standard grid-based launcher application, accessed via one of the soft keys at the bottom of the screen. From here you can access all the phone's main applications via finger-friendly touch-screen buttons. Many of Windows Mobile's most commonly used tools have had a proper touch-screen makeover, too. The alarm clock - a feature I use all of the time - no longer requires prodding with a stylus; the phone book has oversized entries and the music player is much easier to get on with.

Even the phone's web browser - Opera Mobile 9.5 - has been tweaked a little to make it easier to use: slide your finger up and down the right of the screen and a zoom control appears, adding the ability to make fine adjustments to the standard quick zoom and overview mode. Every tap of the screen is accompanied by a haptic feedback buzz - a luxurious extra that iPhone owners can't boast of - and the small square select button at the bottom of the screen, between the start and end call keys, is also touch sensitive and can act as a tiny trackpad, moving a cursor around the screen, or a four-way directional control.

Unfortunately, Windows Mobile, despite Samsung's best efforts, just refuses to go away. Many of the Omnia's advanced settings screens are still fiddly and strewn with check boxes. It can be confusing at times, too, with several settings screens available in Samsung or Microsoft modes, depending on where you launch them from.
Samsung Omnia i900
But the Omnia has a more serious Achilles heel: its text entry method. Like the iPhone, typing is carried out on a touchscreen keyboard but the Samsung's, I'm afraid, just doesn't work very well.

The hardware itself is partly to blame - the screen isn't quite as responsive as the iPhone's and its smaller size doesn't help either - but the design of the keyboard is the main issue. It just doesn't provide enough visual feedback and the keys aren't separated from each other by enough dead space to be usable. It's far too easy to hit a neighbouring key by accident and in landscape mode I pressed the Send soft key while writing an email more than once. It's frustrating, fiddly and not conducive to typing emails, notes or making edits to office documents quickly and though one could replace it with something less frustrating, it doesn't change the fact the screen isn't as responsive as it could be.

Last, but by no means least, battery life is far from wonderful. With the phone hooked up to an Exchange server I managed to extract just a day and a half of light to medium use from the phone. You can extend this to two or possibly even three days by using POP3 or IMAP email and downloading mail manually, of course, but in doing this you'd be missing out on one of the phone's key selling points - instantly delivered e-mail.

Nokia N76 - Classy Phone Model

Nokia N76 - Classy Phone Model
Nokia N76 has a strange resemblance to the Motorola RAZR series phones. It seems that the engineers found the RAZR so impressive that they could not help getting influenced by it. Nonetheless the Nokia N76 has some good features with it. The admirable points being, its 3.5mm headphone jack and its ergonomics that runs on robust Series 60 platform.

The Nokia N76 is a slim clamshell mobile phone. It comes with a mirror like finish and exudes a sensational feel about it. But the screen is smaller and quite a lot of space has been wasted at the sides. Music lovers, however, will love the quick-access multimedia playback buttons below the LCD. There is the ambient light sensor in the keypad which gets activated on moving into darker environments. There's also a customizable multimedia key which we can configure to access frequently used multimedia programs.

Nokia N76 has something that has raised many eyebrows. There is a 3.5mm slot is on the top edge. On one hand it is good that the headset connector does not protrude from the sides of the pocket, and on the other it restricts the handset from opening fully when it is plugged. Also, if you are using the 3.5 mm slot then you cannot receive call, without unplugging the headset. Though this situation can be avoided if you use bundled earpiece.

Apart from design, other features that makes this smartphone desirable are- quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900), 3G capability, mini-USB outlet for connecting to and synchronizing with Microsoft Outlook, 26MB of internal memory, multimedia player, 2-megapixel CMOS camera (with LED flash) etc. The Nokia N76 offers up to 2.75 hours of talktime and an estimated 8.5 days on standby.

Samsung's F480 Armani

Samsung's F480 Armani
News is rife that Samsung will out some cool new phones this MWG 2008, and here is a low-down on a few. The F480 is sans its Armani tag and opts for full-on Samsung branding. This 11.5-mm slim handset features 2.8-inch, 240 x 320 touchscreen and the latest Croix OS with tactile feedback and has 3G connectivity, FM-radio and 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. The Dual Touch Chic G400 flip also vies for attention with its internal (2.2-inches, QVGA) and external touch-sensitive displays. Housed in an all-metal shell you will find a 5-megapixel camera, FM-radio, and 100MB with microSD expansion. The F400 B&O slider is a dual-slider: slide the front face up to reveal a keypad, down to slip the phone into music mode with exposed B&O speakers. This 3G phone features 2.2-inch QVGA display, RDS-enabled FM radio, and microSD card.

LG KC550 Cellphone

Samsung SGH-F400 Music Phone

Samsung announced new cellphone today named SGH-F400. This phone comes with Bang & Olufsen’s ICEpower technology that made for high quality sound . This dual-slide phone comes with HSDPA feature so you can enjoy fast internet access. Other features such as 3-megapixel camera with AF and LED Flash, 2.2 inch 240 x 320 pixel TFT display, and 1GB SD memory equips microSD memory card slot (up to 8GB supported).

For connectivity this phone offers Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0 connectivity, FM radio also available . If you interested, this phone will available on this May in France.

Nokia 5300

Being part of the revamped XpressMusic line, the Nokia 5300 is expressive more than ever and is one great example of how you can have fun with your mobile phone. The dedicated music keys make a sure statement about the music-orientation of the handset. And if that is not enough you can always count on the 1.3 megapixel camera to capture your precious moments and view them on the TFT display with QVGA resolution. Connectivity is at its highest here, since the new Finnish music slider is armed with a mini-USB jack, a standard 3.5mm audio jack and even with stereo Bluetooth support. If the price is right, it really sounds like a good bargain, right? Well, you are not far from the truth.

Key features:

* 1.3 megapixel camera
* Dedicated music keys
* microSD memory card slot (hot-swap)
* Enhanced MP3 player and stereo FM radio
* QVGA display resolution
* Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP profile
* Standard mini-USB port
* Standard 3.5 mm audio jack adapter in the package

Main disadvantages:

* Somewhat cheap looks
* Below average camera quality
* No camera LED flash
* Records video in the low resolution

Nokia has been working hard on developing and promoting their XpressMusic line of mobile phones in a determined way to fight back the Sony Ericsson's Walkman reign in this market niche. The two new handsets called Nokia 5300 XpressMusic, Nokia 5200 XpressMusic and the updated Nokia 3250 XpressMusic now constitute a serious attempt to establish the Finnish manufacturer mobiles on the music phones market. We won't comment on the Nokia 3250 for now since the two other mobiles are of much more interest to us, being brand new models. The Nokia 5200 and 5300 have pretty much the same design. The 5200 is more of a Lite version and is targeted at the budget-conscious buyers, while the Nokia 5300 is a representative of the midrange mobile phones in terms of price and equipment.

Samsung SGH-G600

The lens and its tiny LED flash are hidden away under the back of the casing when the phone is closed to afford them protection. There is a macro mode and autofocus. You can fiddle with the ISO settings which range from 100 to 800 or leave the camera to decide what to do automatically, which is what I did.
The coloured dish, photographed under normal household lighting is clear and sharp. Outdoor shots were also rather good. The shallots were photographed using the macro mode, with the lens about 10cm from the subject and the shot is pretty sharp. The apple is another macro mode photo and is pretty good too.

The outdoor photos were taken on a very dull and gloomy day and lesser phones would have struggled more with the available light. Even with these positive comments, the camera isn't good enough or flexible enough to replace your standalone digital point-and-shoot. Still, as a bonus there is an image editor which includes some rather nice tools such as warping, colour filters, style effects and cropping.

There is, of course, a music player. The SGH-G600 has 40MB of internal memory and support for microSD cards - the slot is on the right edge of the phone's casing. My review sample did not come to me in the final box and lacked headphones.

Sony Ericsson C702 Cyber-shot

Sony Ericsson C702 Cyber-shot

Sony Ericsson's imaging-centric Cyber-shot phones started with the K-series back in early 2006, so imagine our surprise when the Japanese-Swedish company announced that its latest range of camera-phones would be the C702 and the C902 at this year's Mobile World Congress. Although it may take a while for consumers to start associating the Cyber-shot brand with the C-series, we think it's still a good move in the long run.

Upside
One of the main features we like about the Cyber-shot range is the alphanumeric keys pulling double duty as shortcuts to frequently used camera functions. This lets the user toggle between various modes without having to scroll through onscreen menus. We've seen these buttons in earlier models such as the K770i and K850i, so naturally we aren't surprised to see it implemented on the C702, too.

According to the literature, the C702 comes with onboard A-GPS. Our alarm bells rang when we read about the location positioning feature. It's not the first time Sony Ericsson is introducing A-GPS on its devices. The earlier Z750i had it, too, though the problem was that only Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan had enabled the feature (as we were told by the company) at that time we were reviewing the phone.

Unlike handhelds with dedicated built-in GPS chips, an A-GPS receiver relies on an assistant server such as a cell phone tower to triangulate the user's position. The specifications of the C702 didn't mention anything about a built-in GPS chip, so we are going to take this feature with a pinch of salt for now. But if it works like it claims, the GPS feature will allow users to sort and view their images according to the place where they took them.

Geotagging features like these have been around with the help of external GPS loggers or the use of software, but it's still relatively new to see this built into mobile devices. Nokia's latest N96 and N78 also support geotagging functions, except that these handsets have a dedicated GPS chip on top of utilizing A-GPS. This should be able to help pinpoint location more accurately.

Other features on the quadband candy-bar include HSDPA, Bluetooth stereo A2DP, FM radio, 160MB onboard memory, Memory Stick Micro M2 expansion card slot and a splash/dust-resistant chassis.

Downside
One of the most disappointing points about the C702 is that it doesn't come with a Xenon flash module. Instead, it has a pair of LED lights to provide illumination for shooting in dimly lit environments. Xenon flash lights are usually much stronger compared with LEDs, so we found it strange that Sony Ericsson decided not to include it on the C702 Cyber-shot.

Although we haven't seen the actual unit yet, from the pictures, the Call/End buttons sandwiched between the softkeys and shortcut/correction functions appear to be rather small. That may affect the use of the keys slightly.

Outlook
The C702 isn't the evolution we were hoping for in camera-phones, although it should fit well within the company's lineup of Cyber-shots. It's also a good move that the maker has decided to initial its Cyber-shot models with the letter C for easy recognition. Although the handset comes with onboard A-GPS, we are a little apprehensive about it based on our previous experience with the Z750i. We'll have to wait for the actual unit due out in Q2 before passing final judgment.
